Travel is expensive. We all know it. And even though there are A LOT of people online that claim they know the secret to travelling for free (or getting paid to travel), we’ve never found anyone that can back up those claims.
However, there IS a way that you can travel for CHEAP. Or at least cheaper than usual. We exchange pet sitting services for free accommodation. It works out well for all involved, because the owners of the pets get to go away knowing their pets are well looked after, and we get to go on holiday and have free accommodation. Sometimes we even get free use of a car!
We both grew up with our own family pets, of all varieties. We love animals, and can’t wait to have some of our own. Until then, pet sitting is a great alternative for us.
We were looking to move out of our first London accommodation, and wanted to see if there was a way to stay in London for cheap, or free. Sitting in a coffee shop in north London, we found Trusted Housesitters. It’s a website that pairs pet sitters with pet owners. It allows us to plan our holidays based on available pet sits. The first time we used it was in London, just to test it out. It was a huge success, and we loved looking after the two adorable dogs for a week. Afterwards, we jumped from pet sit to pet sit in order to stay in London for free. We did this for two months, which saved us a LOT of money.
Places we’ve been with pet sitting:
- London, U.K.
- Cambridge, U.K.
- Ramsgate, U.K.
- Edinburgh, U.K.
- Tromsø, Norway
If you love animals, and have previous pet experience, we highly recommend it. We’ve never felt hindered by the responsibility to look after people’s pets, and we’ve always been able to get out and explore the new locations.
If it’s something you’d want to do, have a look here:

The link will get you 20% off the £89 membership, and considering we’ve saved over £6000 in accommodation in our first year, it’s easily worth it. In fact, even without the discount, the sign up fee is less than the price for one night’s accommodation in most places worldwide!
